Removing and protecting against viruses

There are many resources for removing viruses from your computer. HouseCall is a free online scanner from Trend Micro.

Every email message sent to Citadel Network email accounts is scanned for viruses before being delivered to the intended recipient. If a virus is detected, the message is not delivered. New viruses can spread rapidly, however, so there is a window of vulnerability between when a virus is created and when the virus scanning software can learn about it and update it's definitions to block it. Always be careful when opening files in your email. If you do not know who it is from or what it is, do not open it.

While many viruses are spread via email attachments and files you download, there are also viruses that can be sent directly to unprotected computers on the Internet. The most widespread examples of these are listed on our Security page. A key step to keeping a Windows computer free of viruses is to regularly install operating system patches available through Windows Update.
