Citadel Windows 95 Internet Setup Howto

Following are step-by-step instructions to configure Windows 95 to access your Citadel Network account using a modem. The procedure as outlined is for Windows 95 OSR 2.1, and may vary slightly for older versions of Windows 95. To determine the version of Windows 95 on your system, see our Windows 95 Version Howto.

1. Install your modem.

See the instructions accompanying your modem.

2. Start the Internet Connection Wizard.

Press the Start button, then Programs, Accessories, Internet Tools, and finally Get on the Internet. The following dialog box will appear. Click Next to continue.

3. Select manual configuration.

Click on Manual, the click Next to continue.

4. Welcome to the Internet Setup Wizard.

Click Next to continue.

5. Choose to use a modem connection.

Click Connect using my phone line, then click Next to continue.

6. Choose not to use Windows Messaging.

We recommend the use of Netscape for web browsing and email, which does not use Windows Messaging. If you will be using Netscape for email, click No, I don't want to use Windows Messaging, then click Next to continue. See our other Howtos for information on configuring Netscape.

7. Select a modem to use.

Select the modem you will use for the Internet from the list displayed. If the modem is not listed, click Cancel. Go go back to your modem installation instructions, then try this procedure again once you are sure the modem is installed correctly. Otherwise, click Next to continue.

8. Select your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Type in Citadel Network in Name of Service Provider, then click Next to continue.

9. Enter the phone number for your modem to dial.

Enter the area code and phone number provided by Citadel when you received your account information. The number will vary depending on your location. Be certain that this number is a local call. If you enter a number that would normally result in long distance charges, your Internet usage will appear on your long distance phone bill. If the number you received is long distance, please call Citadel for a different access number.

Be certain that Bring up terminal window after dialing is not checked, then click Next to continue.

10. Enter your username and password.

Replace username below with the username provided for your account. Also enter your password, which will be displayed as asterisks. Your password is purposefully random in order to keep your account secure, but the software will remember it so that you won't have to.

11. Your IP address.

Click on My Internet Service Provider automatically assigns me one. (even if you have purchased a static IP account), then click Next to continue.

12. The domain name server.

Enter 208.129.162.1 as your DNS Server, then click Next to continue.

13. Done!.

Click Finish to finish.

14. Where to next?

You are now ready to connect. If you already have Netscape, run it and it should automatically dial and connect. If you do not, you can double-click on The Internet on your Windows 95 desktop to run Internet Explorer for now, but be sure to see our page on how to get Netscape.
