Following are step-by-step instructions to configure Netscape 4.76 for Internet email. The procedure as outlined is for Netscape 4.76 on Windows 98, and may vary slightly for other versions of Netscape 4 and Netscape 4 on other systems. To determine the version of Netscape 4 on your system, click Help on the main menu, then About Communicator....
Double-click the Netscape Communicator icon on your Windows 98 desktop.
Click Edit on the main menu, then Preferences....
Click on Identity on the left-hand menu, and fill in the blanks as shown below. Replace Your Name with your full name and username with your Internet account username. If this is a business account, also replace Your Company Name with the name of your organization.
The Signature File allows you to have a block of text automatically appended to every message you send. This information (usually your name, email address, and personal or company home page address) is stored in a plain text file on your hard drive. Any filename and location can be used, but we recommend C:\doc\signature.txt. You can use Notepad to create this file on Windows, or any plain text editor on these or other systems.
Click on Mail Server on the left-hand menu, and fill in the blanks as shown below. As for step 2, replace username with the appropriate value for your Internet account. The exact location of the Local mail directory may vary, but it should not be necessary for you to change it from its default setting.
Next click on Edit... in the Incoming Mail Servers section, and fill in the blanks as shown below.
Skip this step if you do not have a Usenet account.
The newsgroup server is for using Internet discussion groups, know as Usenet or Internet news. As with the mail directory, the exact location of your Newsgroup directory may vary, but it is rarely necessary to change it from its default setting.
If you need to add our server to your list, click on Add... and fill in the blanks as shown below.
Click OK to accept the new settings, then close any open windows.
